Laurence Lesser
historic recordings
On August 5, 2024, Joy Yanai and I arrived at the home of Laurence Lesser, where we spent a week immersed in his world. As former students of Mr. Lesser, we were eager to uncover recordings of his performances spanning the past century. We were joined in this endeavor by Mann-Wen Lo who was a student of Masuko Ushioda, the other half of this distinguished musician power couple.
To our amazement, we discovered entire shelves filled with open reel tapes, cassettes, vinyl records, DAT recordings, and more, including recitals from Mr. Lesser’s teenage years. With only a short time to spend in Cambridge for this visit, we carefully curated a selection of these recordings with Mr. Lesser's guidance, to digitize and preserve them in an easily accessible format.
